Collaboration

Janssen Research & Development, LLC and Museum Dr. Guislain have an heritage in supporting initiatives related to neurological and psychiatric disorders.

Museum Dr. Guislain

Museum Dr. Guislain, founded in 1986 in Ghent, displays in its unique and extensive exhibition the history of psychiatry. The museum is housed in the buildings designed by Dr. Joseph Guislain. The history of psychiatry is addressed in the permanent collection as well as in the changing thematic exhibitions.
The museum's collection is internationally considered one of the most complete and representative in its domain. Apart from the heritage collection on the history of psychiatry and a unique collection of outsider and modern art, the museum also includes an array of exceptional photographs concerning psychiatry, two centuries of uninterrupted archives and an exceptionally extensive library dealing with these matters.

Using all its activities, the museum calls into question the border between the normal and the abnormal, points out the social and cultural factors and contributes to rectifying the lack of knowledge and information on mental healthcare. The museum thus hopes to play a pioneering role by questioning and removing misunderstandings and prejudice with regard to mental illness.
The Museum Dr. Guislain is an initiative of the Brothers of Charity.

Janssen Research & Development

Janssen Research & Development has a longstanding commitment in advancing neuroscience research. This dates back to the work of Dr. Paul Janssen (1926-2003). Dr. Paul is known as one of the 20th century's most gifted and passionate physicians and pharmaceutical researchers. To honor his legacy, the Janssen companies support the mental health community and various advocacy organizations and projects. In 2011, Janssen launched Healthy Minds, a comprehensive initiative that aims to encourage collaboration among biotechnology, pharmaceutical, and public-sector partners to accelerate the discovery of new therapeutic solutions for brain disease.

Janssen Research & Development has collaborated on earlier occasions with Museum Dr. Guislain, emphasizing the need for further research and comprehension of neurologic and psychiatric brain diseases. Both partners are aware of the fact that a collaboration between a pharmaceutical company and a museum is not obvious. However, this collaboration is designed to guarantee that there never is or will be a possible impact on the scientific objectivity and non-alignment of the museum (or its broader activities) and Janssen Research & Development (or affiliated companies).
